Anime news for the week of 7-28-14

1. As we all know the 2014 Comic-Con International in San Diego was more than likely going to give us some exciting news in the realm of Japanese animation and manga. The best news I read is that a company called UDON Entertainment has secured the rights for the English-language edition of the Kill la Kill manga. They state that it should be available sometime in 2015. They are also announced artbooks including two collections of drawings from Osamu Tezuka – Osamu Tezuka Character Illustrations and Osamu Tezuka Anime Character Sketchbook. They seem to be covering the old and the new. I am surprised that neither Funimation nor Viz got the Kill la Kill manga license.

2. In more Comic-Con, Legendary Pictures teased the crowd with a video featuring the classic monsters from TOHO’s monster franchises. They included Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah. And a Godzilla II has been green-lit. Everything old is new again I guess. Just look at how well the re-launch of Sailor Moon has gone. And with both properties they haven’t brought anything new to the table. Of course there is a whole new audience out there that is unfamiliar with both properties. So it all looks new to them.

3. On July 22 it was Nico Yazawa’s birthday. You remember her from “Love Live! School Idol Project”. According to Twitter in Japan, twitter erupted with birthday messages to her. The celebrations were not confined to the Internet. Akihabara, Tokyo’s electronics and anime culture district was festooned with messages and displays congratulating her. You can head over to AnimeNewsNetwork to see all the photos related to the celebration. Makes you wonder how they celebrate a real person’s birthday in Japan.

4. And finally Ao Haru Ride or Blue Spring Ride is getting a live-action movie. It is planned for December 13th. Having seen the actors cast for the major roles of Futaba and Kou I am not sure I want to see this one. They are both too old. She is 21 and he is 26. Any they are playing second year high school student! This seems like a made for tv movie if you ask me. I like the series. I don’t know if I want to see a live action version.
