WA023: Kill La Kill is revisited

Kill La Kill is revisited again. Also we cover Anime industry news for the week and thoughts on new episodes seen this week.

Kill La Kill is revisited again.

It is an original animation. It is directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi and written by Kayuki Nakashima. The production company is Trigger. It is a animation studio founded by former Gainax employees Hiroyuki Imaishi and Masahiko and Ohtsuka in 2011. It is only 24 episodes of action packed excitement and fun. It stated out as a high school battle story. But it is more than that. A hero is Ryuko Matoi a 17-year-old schoolgirl. She comes to Honnouji Academy in search of revenge for the death of her father. She wields half a scissor blade. She believes the other half is there. The student council president is Satsuki Kiryuin. She is appears to be the evil of the piece. Another character is Senketsu a Kamui which is made of Life Fibers. I am not going to spend this whole feature give you the plot of the story. That would take more than an hour to do. Instead I want to talk about what the series did for me.

The artwork is very reminiscent of Gurren Lagann especially where Aikuro Mikisuigi is concerned. He is first seen as Ryuko homeroom teacher at the Academy. But secretly he is a member of the Nudist Beach group. Later in the series we get to see him in his true form/outfit or lack of. The use of the purple beam to hide his naughty bits is really funny. I like the smartness of the device. I found it so clever. And the beam is so bright! The artwork is what brought me into the series. I enjoyed Gurren Lagann, so this was easy for me to get into. The character designs are great. Ryuko, Satsuki and the rest of the academy student have a similar design. It’s when you get to Mako and her family that there is a slightly difference design look. Mako turns out to be a great hero in a little package. She looks like a bumbling fool, but she is stronger than she looks. And she is a great friend of Ryuko. Her family is very supportive of Ryuko also, by taking her in. Her father and brother are prevs too. Plus don’t forget Guts the dog. He can eat with the best of them. The family appears to be constantly hunger.

Another interesting element to the series is the episodes names. At first they appear just title, then I began to see a pattern. They are song titles! I love it. This is a series I would consider buying so I could do a marathon viewing. You know, watch it over an entire weekend.

The music is by Hiroyuki Sawano. He has worked on various animation series, television works and a few movies. He is currently working on a video game. Looks like his first one. By the way, his bio lists the animation series he has worked on, one of the being Attack on Titan! The man is good. The series music CD is available. Unfortunately you can’t buy it in the US. It is available through cdjapan.co.jp Item number: SVWC-7973. Amazon is too expensive. Cdjapan is about $29 compared to Amazon’s $52.

My overall review of this series: two thumbs up! And I haven’t gotten to the end yet. I have about 5 more episodes to go. This series has never disappointed me. As I said before, I would seriously consider buying this one and the merchandise that comes with it.

Anime News For The Week Of 2-24-14

1. Attack on Titan merchandise. There is a lot of if coming available. A short list is: a Levi sleeping mask (approx. $120!), a Survey Corps cap (approx. $35), a parka with all the various corps insignias (approx. $52.50), Colossus titan boxers (approx. $25), a mug (approx. $9) and a scissor strap case (approx. $31.50). And if you are in to wine, they are coming out with Attack on Titan signature plum wines. The Survey Corp has a set of three bottles with an Erwin label (20 proof), Hanji label (14 proof) and Levi (14 proof). I don’t believe these are going to be exported.

2. Death Notes news! We are on a countdown to the 10th anniversary of the series. In March of this year we will be marking the 10th anniversary of this great series. I loved it when it came out. I bought the series, the manga, the live action movies and the light novels that published here. I can’t believe it’s been ten years. Light Yagami, was he a hero, a villain or just a teen who did not understand the world. Perhaps in honor of the 10th anniversary I’ll watch the series again, then the live action movies. I still can’t believe that L was killed. I did not see that coming! Then we had all that controversy with the death notebooks, here and around the world. The writer Tsugumi Ohba only has one other manga series to his name, Bakuman which is pretty popular. I won’t get into the rumors surrounding Tsugumi Ohba and who he really is. I’ll just state that he is a good writer.

3. Space Dandy ratings numbers. Viewership was down this week by 6% compared to being up about 7% last week. This series seems to be jumping around. Though looking at its ranking at Adult Swim (1st place through 152nd place) has been steadily climbing over the week. It started at 64th its first week out. Now it’s at 40th. Though it’s 2nd week it was as high as 39th. The following week it was as low as 58th. For the last three weeks, it has moved from 44th to 43rd and last week to 40th week. Is the American audience not taking to our Dandy? It doesn’t have the action of a Bleach or Naruto Shippuden. Or even a continuing story line or arc. This is a hard series to love. Is Watanabe possibly making it hard to follow? What is his grand plan? Is there no plan at all?

Anime episode overview for new shows seen during the week of 2-24-14

Which series stood out for me: Nobunaga the Fool.
Which series disappointed me: nobody. All the episodes this week were good or above average.
Which series surprised me: The Pilot’s Love Song. It was such a nice episode. And we are getting ready for the real battle to begin. The calm before the storm.
Which series did I want to or did give up on: Sakura Trick. I don’t think this series is going to get better or go anywhere. I think I could have more fun watching Nisekoi.
